What do you like most about Bays Precinct today? For example, its proximity to the CBD or its location on Sydney Harbour.

Marina and Marina Facilities, boat Launching, activation of recreational access to Sydney Harbour.

In order to attract more visitors and revenue to Sydney and NSW, this is a potential world class convention and exhibition site with first class hotel facilities included. Access to the CBD, freeway to/from airport, harbour location, parking and other services potential e.g. light rail, ferries etc - all add up to a major commercial, retail and hospitality precinct potential. This project can also be developed as a showcase for Australian design, energy and eco sustainability as well as some stunning permanent exhibitions for Australian artists. hk

What you're describing is exactly Darling Harbour - we already have that. Just because Darling Harbour is a failure is no reason to try again a bit further out.

The bays themselves, despite almost two centuries of abuse are whats most at stake here. These bays are finally showing signs of recovery as water quality improves and fish stocks begin to recover. There are now schools of fish moving up the canals and there are often white faced herons, pied and black cormorants and even an occasional striated heron visiting the area. This is what I like best about the Bays Precinct.

Whatever is approved for the area the environmental impacts must be considered above all else. If a mega (power boat) marina precinct goes ahead the recovery of the the whole area will be jepordised.

The thing that makes Sydney Harbour special compared to other harbours is its cleanliness - something totally incompatible with marinas and power boats.

As I said in your other post, you have pollution and mega yachts so so so wrong. Amazing how un informed people make NO effort to become informed.

I will buy you a ticket to the Boatshow, the 2nd biggest show at Darling Harbour year on year, because people love boats

MattB Comment 3.1.1 6 Jul 2009, 10:21 AM

Mega Yachts (Giant POWER boats), if you bothered to find out, consume massive amounts of fuel. They can easily go through a $1000 tank of diesel in a day. Just look at the huge wake they create as they plough through the water, thats an enormous amount of energy. To claim these things are in any way clean is nonsense. As for the Boat Show at Darling Harbour, it is a depressing sight to see so much decadent consumption on display.

Only yesterday a Seal was run over by a power boat off Botany Bay according to a VHF broadcast I heard whilst out in my own boat (non petrol driven).

I like

- the heritage character of the area

- the proximity to the CBD - not too close, not too far away

- being surrounded by water

- a mix of uses for different people, including the residents

Jem Comment 5 8 Jul 2009, 4:46 PM

I like being near the water, and all the maritime commercial activity. Though there’s not much of that now, thanks to our gutless government.

Because its so close to the CBD, there needs to more people living there, more commercial operations, retail and mixed uses of all types, including recreational access. The Cruise Boat terminal is good, but big commercial carriers would have been better, like the car transporters which now have to go to Wollongong.

Its tragic as it is now... Empty, desolate just horrible

A Metro station at White Bay and another rail link to the West rail line would be one catalyst which might bring the area back to life.

Yes yes The River Thames, London, Circa 1900, thats what we want for Sydney Harbour right Jem?

Savvy Comment 6 18 Jul 2009, 11:25 AM

I agree with Jem, I like the martime commercial activity of the Bays area. It's great to see boats, yachts and ships in the area.

I like that the land is flat, traffic free with water views - perfect for shared space and sustainable transport corridors.

The disused rail corridor under Victoria Rd brings the opportunity to link the Hawthorne Canal Greenway corridor with the Anzac Bridge path on a flat, traffic free route.

The fact that commercial shipping is delivering goods right to the place where it is being consumed.

The water views.

The fact that it makes Balmain a peninsula, so that it will always have a community feel.

The distance to the CBD.

I quite like Devines shipyard - handy to have a scrap merchant, casual industrial space, firewood seller, metal dealer, marine service place nearby!

Kim Comment 8 31 Jul 2009, 11:04 AM

There is so much to like about living in Balmain. Surrounded by water, 3 bus stops to the CBD, dog friendly, people of all ages and walks of life, great parks, cafes, pubs and live music. What I would love to see is some public access to the water at White Bay and a ferry terminal from White Bay to Circular Quay. What we really need is a comprehensive masterplan, not just adhoc projects that fail to look at the whole area.
